Authorize.net – Shopify Plugin Migration and Upgrade

Shopify connects to the Easy Pay Direct Gateway through the Authorize.net payments app. Shopify now requires merchants to migrate from the legacy Authorize.net integration to the new Authorize.net Shopify Plugin to maintain payment acceptance and compatibility with Shopify’s updated checkout.

Migration Deadline

You must complete the migration by August 31, 2025 to avoid payment disruptions.

After this date, the legacy Authorize.net gateway will be decommissioned and card payments will not be available at checkout for merchants who have not migrated.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, confirm the following:

  • You have access to your Shopify Admin Portal.

  • You have administrator permissions for the Shopify store.

  • One-page checkout is enabled in Shopify.

  • Your Shopify checkout is upgraded to support extensibility (Checkout Extensibility enabled).

Step-by-Step Migration Instructions

Step 1: Log in to Shopify

1. Log in to your Shopify Admin Portal.

2. Go to Settings > Payments > Alternative Providers.

Step 2: Install the new Authorize.net payments app

1. Select authorize.net.

2. Follow the prompts to install the new Authorize.net payments app (new Authorize.net Shopify Plugin).

Step 3: Activate the new Authorize.net app

1. After installation, activate the new Authorize.net app.

2. Confirm your card brand and payment options are configured as desired.

Step 4: Deactivate the legacy Authorize.net app

1. In your Shopify Payments settings, deactivate the legacy Authorize.net integration.

Step 5: Test the connection

1. Perform a test transaction.

2. Confirm the transaction appears correctly in your Authorize.net Gateway reporting.

Important Changes and Known Gaps

Transaction ID visibility

  • Shopify’s Payment ID replaces the Authorize.net Transaction ID as the primary identifier.

  • The Shopify Payment ID appears in the Description field in the Authorize.net Merchant Interface.

Third-party applications

  • Reference IDs are changing. Third-party apps can no longer use the Authorize.net Transaction ID for order fulfillment or capture requests.

  • Subscription and OMS/ERP order management/fulfillment apps must use the Shopify Payment ID.

  • Contact Shopify or your third-party provider for integration updates.

Customer Information Manager (CIM) and Recurring Billing (Subscriptions)

  • Customer profiles/tokens and subscription billing are managed through Shopify’s token vault and supported subscription providers.

If you have already migrated CIM (profiles/tokens) and recurring billing (subscriptions) to Shopify:

  • You only need to migrate to the new Authorize.net Shopify Plugin. No additional profile or token migration is required.

If you have stored customer profiles with Authorize.net and have not migrated tokens to Shopify:

  • You must complete a token migration from Authorize.net to Shopify’s Token Vault using the process provided in the official migration documentation.

Migrating existing subscriptions to Shopify allows you to continue charging existing subscribers without disruption.

Fraud management

  • Fewer data fields are available for fraud decisioning due to current limitations in data passed through Shopify’s Payment Provider Platform API.

  • Manual fraud review actions in Shopify are no longer supported.

  • The fraud review window is now 15 minutes.

  • Review and adjust fraud settings. An accept/reject model is recommended for Shopify-originating transactions.

IP address transmission

Effective May 9, 2025, Shopify transmits the actual customer IP address to Authorize.net. The “Customer IP” field in transaction details reflects the customer’s IP address rather than Shopify’s server address.

Refunds

  • Refunds for transactions processed through the legacy integration must be processed in the Authorize.net Merchant Interface.

  • Refunds can be processed through the legacy integration for up to 6 months after migration.

How to Find the Shopify Payment ID for Reconciliation

To locate the Shopify Payment ID in Shopify:

1. Open the order in the Shopify Admin Panel.

2. Expand the line that reads: “Payment was processed on authorize.net.”

3. Under “Information from the gateway,” locate the Payment ID.

In Authorize.net, the same Payment ID appears in the transaction’s Description field.

Note: Due to length limitations, the Payment ID cannot currently be displayed in additional fields. Shopify and Authorize.net have indicated future improvements are planned.
